On Sunday July 29th, Hollywood Horrorfest hosted the US premiere of “Horror Movie: A Low Budget Nightmare” which essentially is the story behind the Artsploitation Films 2017 gorebuster, Red Christmas.

Actress/Producer Dee Wallace (The Howling, Cujo, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial)  and Director Craig Anderson provided great insight in a special Q&A that followed the screening.

Directed by Gary Doust, “HORROR MOVIE: A Low Budget Nightmare” documents writer/director Craig Anderson’s troubled journey to make his feature film debut, the horror movie “Red Christmas” – a quaint story about a murderous aborted fetus. The documentary dramatically follows Anderson’s emotional rollercoaster ride funding, directing and finally trying to sell his dream movie to an industry he knows little about. It’s indie film-school 101 captured in a engrossing (and at times gross) tale of wide-eyed dreamers, Hollywood scream queens and a vengeful fetus at Christmas.

Christmas day becomes a hellish homecoming in this unusual Australian horror/comedy gorefest that marks the big-screen return of genre icon Dee Wallace among its sinister stocking of treats. An exploitation film with heart and considerable guts — of both the courage and corporeal variety — RED CHRISTMAS takes things to volume eleven on the horror charts while giddily yet sincerely addressing themes of eugenics, feminism, privacy, religion and law, all in the midst of an over-the-top rollercoaster of a slasher-film siege. As we said, this is an unusual one! Wallace is just amazing, giving her all with an intensely driven performance, and Gerard O’Dwyer, actor and ambassador for Don’t DISMyABILITY, shines brilliantly amidst the film’s numerous eccentric casting choices.
